Perry is the daughter Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry, a director. Her first roles on television were two times for the character Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne which was played by her mom. Perry was forbidden to start acting by her parents until she reached adulthood, as they feared the anxiety it could cause. Perry said that she was too shy to do any acting when she was in high school. However, she started acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry began her career as an actress in New York after graduation, having minor roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homesickness led to Perry go back to California and pursue a career as a theater actress. She was in 2013 on stage with The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. In 2015, she performed with her father as well as Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. In 2017, she played an appearance on The ABC Political thriller Scandal featuring her father. She was also cast in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spin-off Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. She was able to be cast in the character despite her family connection to the character.
